Boatworks Alumni Program
2023-2024

What is the Boatworks Alumni Program? Our alumni are an important part of the Brooklyn Boatworks community. Our goal is to provide our alums with distinct opportunities to continue to grow and deepen the skills they acquired by participating in our programs, as well as form meaningful connections within and beyond the BKBW community. Hone your craft, expand your maritime and STEM knowledge, develop leadership skills, and make new friends, mentors, and memories! Please join us for the fun and engaging programming we have planned. We can’t wait to have you back!

Who Can Participate: Anyone who has previously participated in BKBW’s in school or Summer programming or a past Community Build. Check each event for age restrictions.

  • Over the course of this 5-day workshop, students will participate in a hands-on introduction to the craft of oar-making. They will use traditional hand tools like a spokeshave and blockplane to carve and shape a well-balanced set of oars to row our Dory. Additionally, students will have a chance to complete independent wooden spoon carving projects to take home at the end of the week! Workshops will occur daily the week of Spring Break from 12:00pm-4:00pm. Ages 12+.

  • Last year, BKBW’s trip to the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut was the highlight of our Alumni Program. Please join us this June for our 2nd, now annual, overnight trip to Mystic! Participants will immerse themselves in the rich history of Mystic and the maritime world by spending two nights sleeping aboard a fully rigged ship from the 19th century, exploring the Museum’s seaport village, learning about stars and the fundamentals of navigation in Mystic’s own planetarium, and getting their sea legs by learning to sail right on the coast with professional instructors!

NOTE: NYC DOE schools will NOT be in session Thursday, June 6th and Friday, June 7th. This trip is all-inclusive and will be 3 days and 2 nights. Students will meet BKBW instructors after school on Wednesday, June 5th (exact time and location TBD) to travel to the Museum together via bus. Students will return to pickup location via bus the evening of Friday, June 7th. Ages 12+.
