Using traditional wooden boat building as a means to support positive youth development, BROOKLYN BOATWORKS engages students in planning and building 7’-6” “Optimist” prams, small sailboats used worldwide by thousands of young people.

During the course of a year, small groups of students work together to build and rig a sailboat constructed in plywood using simple hand tools.  Students learn both hard skills (measuring, reading plans, construction, project management) and critical soft skills (communication, leadership, teamwork) that open new job and career possibilities for them. The program is designed for middle – high school students living in an urban environment and requires no prior woodworking experience.
Unlike many other boat building education programs we actively engage students in all phases of the building process, including model building, learning basic tool safety, reading Computer Aided Design (CAD) plans, actual construction, and naming and painting their finished boat. Various activities are planned during the semester through which the students gain a deeper understanding of how boats work and how they can engage the waters of their home city.
